Homework: Homework will go home every day. Students in second grade are required to read 20 minutes a night. The students will need to write down the title and author of the book they read, as well as a one sentence summary telling about what they read. It helps to reinforce comprehension if the students are able to discuss the book after they have read it. This can be done by having your student retell the story in their own words or by asking them open-ended questions about the story. Sometimes the students will have paper copies of some of the phonics books we read in class with their homework. These are to be kept at home and practiced. They can be included with their 20 minutes of reading. Along with the reading, there will be one page of math and one page of language arts. Homework is due the next day. We will start homework on the first day of school.
Super Second Grader of the Week: Each student will have a chance to be the Super Second Grader of the Week. They are chosen randomly every Thursday. On that Thursday I will send home a poster that you and your child can complete together. This needs to be returned on Monday, along with any pictures or items your child wishes to share. The Superstar has a bulletin board that they can fill with photos, pictures they have drawn, or whatever they want to share with the class. The Superstar also has many privileges that week, like line leader, calling rows to line up, being the messenger, etc. At the end of the week, our class will write letters to the Super Second Grader and make a book.
Communication: We have a great school website that is up and running. I try to keep all my pages on the website up to date. There is a calendar on the website that tells you important dates. There is also a place for messages. I will send home a newsletter every Thursday, along with the Thursday notes. I will also post the newsletter on the website.
The best ways to get a hold of me are through email, my classroom phone, or by sending a note to school. I think that communication between teachers and parents is important. Please let me know if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Classroom Behavior: In the first few weeks of school our class will work on classroom behavior a lot. I want to make it clear to every student what I expect from them and what they can expect from me. We do a lot of positive discipline in our room, like checkbooks, extra rewards, and special privileges. If a student chooses to not follow our classroom rules, they will receive a warning, possible loss of recess, or loss of a privilege. If a student chooses to continue to not follow classroom or school rules, they will get a phone call home or possibly a detention. I can also create individual behavior plans for students. I am always open to have a conference throughout the year. If you would like a conference, let me know and we can schedule one.
Student Store and Checkbooks: The students will each have a “checkbook” that they can earn and lose classroom money in. They earn “dollars” in class and they can then spend the money at our student store. In the student store, I have toys, games, art supplies, all sorts of things for the students to buy. There are also coupons they can buy that apply in class (lunch with the teacher, computer time, free page of homework, teacher chair, etc.). Every other week the store will be open for students to spend their classroom money. I would love a parent or two to help with the store. We would also love any donations for the store (old toys, art supplies, etc.).
Volunteers: I always love to have parents and families involved in our classroom. We will need parent volunteers mostly during centers time. If there is another way or time you would like to volunteer in our room, please let me know.
Sharing: Sharing will be done in two different ways this year. When your child is the Super Second Grader of the Week, they can bring in items to share. We are also going to have a sharing box. Each child will have a chance to bring home the sharing box. It will go home on Monday and needs to be returned by Friday. When the sharing box comes home, choose an item to be shared that fits in the box and is appropriate for school. Your child will then need to write three clues about the item. On Friday, we will read the clues and try to figure out what is in the box. Then we will have time to hear all about the item. Toys are not allowed at school, unless it is part of sharing.
Birthdays: If it is your child’s birthday, you are welcome to send in a special treat for their birthday. Also, please let me know if there are any allergies or food concerns for your child.
Field Trips: I am in the process of planning many exciting and enriching field trips this year. We will need drivers for field trips, so please update your insurance forms in the office. They need to be updated every year.
